SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 - LABOR DAY PICNIC AT THE JPJ CABIN! Please call Sarah to help make the food selection a variety and not just all deserts. Sarah will lead a short hike. Those who want to do a longer hike, go for it! By the way, some of us just like to do porch sitting before and after lunch.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): From the Sparton Road parking lot, we will walk on the road for a short distance to connect with trail #5 and enjoy a walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. This hike has a few short, mild climbs along the way. Come out and join us for a stroll through a very pretty area of York County. If it is raining, please call ahead to confirm we are still on.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 – SHORT HIKE Nixon County Park: Join us for a pleasant hike of about 4 miles. This as you may have guessed is one of our go to places now that we are geezers. The weather should be pleasant and the hills not too challenging. Hope to see you there.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

 

York County Pawpaw Festival at the Horn Farm Center, Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25 from 10 AM to 3 PM: The club will have a table at the Pawpaw festival. The PawPaw festival spans 2 days (September 24 and 25), but the club will only be at the festival on Saturday. More information can be found at York County’s 18th Annual Pawpaw Fest – Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. If you are interested in helping with the table, please contact Kathy Yost at .

 

Hiker Happy Hour at Sickman’s Mill, Thursday, September 8 (6PM – 9PM): Volunteers needed to assist with a combined York Hiking Club and the Mason-Dixon Trail System at the Hiker Happy Hour at Sickman’s Mill (Hiker Happy Hour at Sickman's Mill - Lancaster Conservancy) that is sponsored by the Lancaster Conservancy. Please contact Jim Hooper at 717- 951-6808 or jimhooper07@gmail.com, if you can volunteer to help staff the table.

 

KTA Trail Challenge, Saturday, September 10: Please consider volunteering for the KTA Trail Challenge by signing up at Volunteer at the KTA Trail Challenge (kta-hike.org). The York Hiking Club, Lancaster Hiking Club, SATC, Mountain Club of Maryland, and the Mason Dixon Trail System have all been a tremendous help to KTA and the Trail Challenge in previous years, and KTA is requesting our help this year. The trail challenge is ran on the Lancaster side of the Susquehanna River. 

 

2022 Hike Leaders Wanted: Please contact Alan Noble (717-758-8470 or ) if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. We can partner new hike leaders with experienced hike leaders.

 

Turkey Hike and Dinner: The club will hold the annual turkey hike and dinner at the JPJ Cabin this year. The club needs a volunteer to take the lead in setting up the turkey dinner and obtain club volunteers to prepare food and staff the event. Please contact Alan Noble, 717-758-8470 or to volunteer as the lead for the event.

 

A.T. Museum 2022 A. T. Hall of Fame, Saturday, October 1: The A. T. Museum located in Pine Grove Furnace State Park is having the 2022 A. T. class of inductees. Gwen Loose, Vice President of the Museum Board and Museum Curator, will also lead a dedication of the Museum’s new interactive trail map display, followed by a guided tour of the Museum. More information can be found on the A. T. Museum web site at News - Appalachian Trail Museum (atmuseum.org).
Annual Membership Meeting, Friday, October 7, 6:30 PM – 9 PM: The annual pot-luck dinner and annual meeting will be at the York Township Park Building. Club Officers and Chairpersons election that make up the YHC Board membership. The club needs to discuss the status of the trail maintenance and the YHC section of the Appalachian Trail, and use of the club’s Facebook presence.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
