NOTE: The Thursday evening hikes MIGHT still continue in September and will be announced weekly via email blast and Facebook. If there is no announcement, there is no hike. 

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 - LABOR DAY PICNIC AT THE JPJ CABIN! We will start our hike through the wilderness at 10:00 AM. At 1:30 PM we will begin our sumptuous feast. Please call Sarah to help make the food selection a variety and not just all deserts. I hope someone bring a chocolate something to make Sarah happy. By the way, some of us like to do just porch sitting before and after the event.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 – KTA TRAIL CHALLENGE: The York Hiking Club is maintaining the Keystone Trail Association (KTA) Otter Creek Campground Gate for the runners and hikers continuing with the 50K event. York Hiking Club (YHC) volunteers are needed for various times starting at 10:45AM through 4:45PM. Contact Alan Noble with the times available to volunteer. Remember to bring a chair, snacks, and water for your own use.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 – FALL BIRD WANDER AT NIXON COUNTY PARK: “Whooo” is calling in the woods, who will stay the winter, and who has just arrived from points north to winter here in York County? Naturalist Andrew Wolfgang will help you identify the birds that will be visible throughout the winter and a few just passing through. Bring a field guide and binoculars. A limited number of loaner pairs will be available. Ages 10 and up. No fee, no registration required. (NOTE: This is not a YHC event. It is York County Parks, but since we have no hike this day, why not go check it out!)

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): From the Sparton Road parking lot, we will walk on the road for a short distance to connect with trail #5 and enjoy a walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. This hike has a few short, mild climbs along the way. Come out and join us for a stroll through a very pretty area of York County. If it’s raining, please call ahead to confirm we are still on.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 – MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): Spring Valley County Park is one of the hidden gems of the park system and we’ll be hiking some of its many multi use trails. Be prepared for a couple of stream crossings, some muddy conditions, as well as a number of hill climbs. Bring good hiking shoes/boots, snack, and water.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 – SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): It’s autumn! The leaves are beginning to change so just maybe we will get to see some color; also if you haven’t seen Lake Williams, did I say lake, lately you’re in for quite a surprise. This will be a five mile hike around the lake and a moderate pace. Hey, we’re not young anymore. So come join us on what I hope will be a glorious fall day. Rain, forgetaboutit!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 – LONG HIKE (10 MILES): We’ll hike the Conestoga Trail from the Pequea boat launch to the Norman Wood Bridge. This will include such highlights as the House Rock Overlook, Wind Cave, Pinnacle, and Kellys Run. We may also add in Tucquan Glen if the weather is nice and we’re moving along. There are lots of ups and downs on this trail, roots and rocks, maybe mud. Bring good hiking shoes/boots, snack, water, and lunch.

KTA Volunteers: Volunteers needed for the KTA Trail Challenge for the YHC station at Otter Creek Campground on September 7, 2019. Register on the KTA website https://www.kta-hike.org/tc-registration.html and in the field if associated with an organization, enter YHC. Email Alan Noble with your availability.

 

Sawyer Training: If anyone is interested in becoming a certified sawyer (male or female) for the AT please let Tom Morley know ( ). The next training session is October 26 and 27. This is a two day class to become certified to operate a chainsaw on the AT. There is no charge, but you should be willing to do sawyer work on request. Contact Tom with any questions, class fills up fast. Our club can probably get at least one, maybe two into the class. 

 

Hike Leaders Wanted: We are so thankful for all of our hike leaders and were fortunate to add several new hike leaders this year. We are always in need of additional new hike leaders, so please consider leading a hike or two in 2019. Please contact David Lukes at if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. Training will be provided.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
