SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1 - CODE ORANGE AT GIFFORD PINCHOT STATE PARK: This will be a joint work hike with the YHC, MDTS, KTA and Friends of Gifford Pinchot State Park. We will be working on the Beaver Creek Section of the Mason-Dixon Trail improving the tread way by haling gravel in and repairing or replacing boardwalk. Free camping will be supplied by the state park and lunch provided by the Friends of Gifford Pinchot State Park. We need a head count for the lunch so contact Jim Hooper at .

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 – LONG HIKE (12 MILES): This will be an exploratory hike (means new to me) on Appalachian Trail from Swatara Gap to Rt 501. We'll start at Trout Run Trailhead, cross historic Waterville Bridge, climb up Blue Mt.(approx.1400ft) to State Game Lands #80 then hike along ridge. We will see 4 lookouts, pass 2 shelters then end at parking area at Rt 501 near shelter. There is a climb at at start then ridge walking w/ minor ups and downs. Hopefully we'll see some leaves changing and great views at lookouts. This is a shuttle hike to drop car(s) at Rt 501 then return to Trout Run trailhead parking area to begin (why earlier start time). Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch and your sense of adventure for this early October hike!

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23 – SHORT HIKE (4 Miles) This a loop hike starting at the Gifford Pinchot State Park Conewago Day Use Area. Bring trail shoes or hiking boots, water, and a snack,

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

 

2022 Hike Leaders Wanted: Please contact Alan Noble (717-758-8470 or ) if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. We can partner new hike leaders with experienced hike leaders.

 

Turkey Hike and Dinner: The club will hold the annual turkey hike and dinner at the JPJ Cabin this year. The club needs a volunteer to take the lead in setting up the turkey dinner and obtain club volunteers to prepare food and staff the event. Please contact Alan Noble, 717-758-8470 or to volunteer as the lead for the event.

 

A.T. Museum 2022 A. T. Hall of Fame, Saturday, October 1: The A. T. Museum located in Pine Grove Furnace State Park is having the 2022 A. T. class of inductees. Gwen Loose, Vice President of the Museum Board and Museum Curator, will also lead a dedication of the Museum’s new interactive trail map display, followed by a guided tour of the Museum. Annual Membership Meeting, Friday, October 7, 6:30 PM – 9 PM: The annual pot-luck dinner and annual meeting will be at the York Township Park Building. Club Officers and Chairpersons election that make up the YHC Board membership. The club needs to discuss the status of the trail maintenance and the YHC section of the Appalachian Trail, and use of the club’s Facebook presence.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
