WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN MAY - SHORT HIKE (4-6 MILES): Please join us for a weekly Wednesday workout hike at York County Parks’ Lake Williams. Pace will be brisk (about 2.5-3.0 mph) and mileage will increase as we gain more daylight. We will not hike past dusk. Bring snack, water and hiking shoes/boots. Hike is on, rain or shine.

THURSDAY, MAY 2 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): There’s a new section of the Heritage Rail Trail opening and the York Hiking Club will be there! Come out for the ribbon cutting and then walk the new section from N. George Street to Rt. 30 and back, or go further if you wish.

SUNDAY, MAY 5 – LONG HIKE (11 MILES): Loop hike around Lake Redman crossing under I83 in two locations. There will be water crossings which consist of walking in a stream bed for about 100 feet and the other water crossing consists of walking through a 4-foot-high culvert for 100 feet to the other side. There will be several hills, possibly muddy of recently having rain. Bring lunch, snack, water, and headlamp for walking through the 4-foot-high culvert, and hiking boots or trail shoes.

SUNDAY, MAY 5 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): From Sparton Road parking lot we will walk on the road for a short distance to connect with trail #5 and enjoy a walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. This hike has a few short, mild climbs along the way. Come out and join us for a stroll through a very pretty area of York County.

SUNDAY, MAY 12, SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): Hike around Richard M. Nixon County Park; we will hike on the perimeter trails around the park. Trail has several hills, but they are well maintained. Bring hiking boots or trail shoes. Also bring water and snacks if you would like.

SUNDAY, MAY 19: SHORT HIKE (5 MILES): This scenic hike starts at the Wrightsville Boat Launch and ends at the Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. We will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow, Grace Plateau, and on to High Point, where you have a 360-degree view of the river and surrounding hills. Please bring water, snacks and wear good walking shoes/boots.

SUNDAY, MAY 19 - LONG HIKE (10-12 MILES): On this super fun adventure hike, we’ll take on the epic climbs up to some sweeping views of Lehigh Gap. We’ll use the Appalachian Trail and some side trails to create loops on both sides of the gap, which has a magnificent open rock scramble on the east side and a short but steep side trail to the Devil’s Pulpit on the west side. Wear good boots/hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. Drive time is about two hours each way but it will be worth it!

MONDAY, MAY 27 - MEMORIAL DAY HIKE AND LUNCH AT JPJ CABIN: The Falsettis will lead the hike at 10:30 AM which will be followed by lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers provided by the Falsettis. We will need the rest of the fixens for a picnic like potato salad, etc. There is also an option to spend Sunday night at the cabin, before Monday’s hike and picnic.

Saturday, May 11: Hike and meeting of the Mason-Dixon Trail System. The hike will start at 9:00 AM in Elk Neck State Forest and the meeting will start at 1:00 PM in the North East, MD Library. Sawyer Training: If anyone is interested in becoming a certified sawyer (male or female) for the AT please let Tom Morley know ( ). The next training session is October 26 and 27. This is a two day class to become certified to operate a chainsaw on the AT. There is no charge, but you should be willing to do sawyer work on request. Contact Tom with any questions, class fills up fast. Our club can probably get at least one, maybe two into the class. 

 

Hike Leaders Wanted: We are so thankful for all of our hike leaders and were fortunate to add several new hike leaders this year. We are always in need of additional new hike leaders, so please consider leading a hike or two in 2019. Please contact David Lukes at if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. Training will be provided.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
