SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6 - LONG HIKE (14 MILES): Out-and-back on the Appalachian Trail, hiking south from Boiling Springs to Whiskey Springs Road. First 1.5 miles is flat; then ups and downs. Shorter option (6 Miles) for medium distance hikers or bad weather conditions: turn around at Center Point Knob. Bring hiking boots, water, lunch, snacks.
Meeting Location: ATC MidAtlantic Regional Office, 4 E First St., Boiling Springs
Departure Time: 9:00 AM
Hike Leader: Gwen Loose, 717-891-9967. No calls/texts after 9 PM
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12 - MEDIUM HIKE (9MILES): Annual Christmas in Harpers Ferry Hike! Moderate 9 miles on the AT going into Harpers Ferry and continuing to Maryland Heights overlook via the longer (and more strenuous) path. Those who wish to shop in HF may do so and others may return to the cars along the river trail. Options for dinner in HF or the Guide House Grille just outside HF on way home. Since there will not be an open house at the AT Headquarters this year, I will provide hot chocolate/cider at the end of hike. If in the spirit, please bring cookies or snacks to share. Bring boots, poles, lunch, water and holiday cheer!
Meeting Location: Parking lot at Rt 340 and Shenandoah
St, HF (after cross second bridge on 340, make immediate right onto Shenandoah and then right into parking lot). Parking lot fills quickly. This is where the hike will start and end. There is a $20.00 per car fee for parking in national park.
Departure Time: 9:15 AM
Hike Leader: Kim Shue, phone 717-688-5142 between 7-9 PM.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19 - MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): We will take a leisurely hike along Mason-Dixon trail from Long Level up a moderately challenging rock scramble (take your time and it's FUN) called 'Dragon Spine' from geocache site, then follow rolling woods path and dirt road to Cuff's Run to see waterfalls. Along the way, there are lookouts where if we get lucky can view an Eagle and other birds flying at eye level. There are a couple mild rocky areas to climb down and back at stream runs. We will rest at waterfalls, then return when all ready. Wear blaze orange or have bright colors on backpack in case we see hunters (probably not many in this hilly area along Susquehanna River). Bring plenty of water, lunch and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Come out and enjoy a great workout hike before Christmas feasting!
Meeting Location: Long Level parking lot
at Bull Run Rd sign (across from Shanks Mare Outfitters store and next to playground)
Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Hike Leader: Janine Zell, 717-684-7891 (home) and on day of hike 717-992-2476 (cell)
