SUNDAY, APRIL 2, LONG HIKE (14 MILES) This hike is Appalachian Trail from Port Clinton south to Rt 183 continuing next section. We'll start a steep, rocky climb up Blue Mt. while full of energy, then hike along ridge to see lookouts including Auburn Lookout, pass 5 spring areas, Marshall's path and Phillips Canyon campsite. First part could be rocky. Lunch stop at Eagle's Nest Shelter then another lookout before we pass junction w/ Sand Spring Trail. The remainder is flat ridge walking, crossing over Game Commission service road and passing Radio Towers back to Rt 183 parking lot. Then we'll shuttle back to Port Clinton and those who wish to explore town will see Canal & Train Museum, a Candy and Nut Shop, and Civil War history. Please check websites for hrs. open.
Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring poles if desired, lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. Speed approx. 2.5mph depends on hikers.

SUNDAY APRIL 16-FLOWER HIKE AND COVERED DISH MEAL – The Harbinger of spring wildflowers came up in March leading to the start of spring wild flowers. Each spring we hike by the Susquehanna River and count the multitude of flowers on the riverbank. Quite a display awaits our eyes this year as usual. There will be a short hike starting at 10: 30 AM counting how many flowers we can find. Anyone wanting to go on a longer hike at 10:30 is welcome to do so. At 1:30 we will have our covered dish repast. Please call Sarah to tell what covered dish you would like to bring so we don’t get just all deserts…although some might think that would be good eating…we need variety in our life.

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, SHORT HIKE (ABOUT 5.5 MILES) We will meet at the parking lot at Glatfelter Station and walk/hike to Hannover Junction. This is a real fun hike with lots to see. Green fields, Codorus Greek, some artwork at Seven Valley, and most important Hannover Junction where President Lincoln stopped on his way to Gettysburg. This is an out-and-back hike on the rail trail. Wear good shoes, bring water, snacks, but no hiking poles required.

SUNDAY, APRIL 30, SHORT HIKE (ABOUT 5 MILES) A loop hike on the Conewago Day Use side of the lake. We will meet at the signboard at the parking lot. The trail is rocky in some sections and has rolling hills. Bring water, snacks, hiking boots or trail shoes.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:


Board Member and Officer Openings: 

Without a Trail Committee person, the York Hiking Club cannot meet its bylaw requirements of maintaining portions of the Appalachian Trail and the Mason-Dixon Trail. The York Hiking Club will have to relinquish its section of the Appalachian Trail. Also a zoom meeting 5/17/23. This can be discussed after the presentation this Friday at the York Township Recreational Building.

Other board positions are the Secretary (officer role), Activities Committee, and Director at Large. The club needs club members to volunteer to help manage the York Hiking Club mission to create, promote, and encourage outdoor recreation, with emphasis on hiking. Please contact Alan Noble at 717-758-8470 or by email at , if you would like to volunteer for any of the club roles.

2023 Hike Leaders Wanted: Please contact Alan Noble (717-758-8470 or ) if you would like to start leading hikes for the club. We can partner new hike leaders with experienced hike leaders.

Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays area also wanted. If you would like to lead a Family Friendly hike on Saturday or Sunday please contact the monthly chairperson. A short hike is recommended. Contact David Lukes with any questions about leading hikes at

* "If there are no objections within 10 days" refers to things like almost getting a hike kicked out of a park.

A sheet is handed out to all New hikers at the parking lots before the hikes.

 

Our new place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

  From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
