WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN APRIL - SHORT HIKE (4-6 MILES): Please join us for a weekly Wednesday workout hike at York County Parks’ Lake Williams. Pace will be brisk (about 2.5-3.0 mph) and mileage will increase as we gain more daylight. We will not hike past dusk. Bring snack, water and hiking shoes/boots. Hike is on, rain or shine.
Hike Dates: April 3, 10, 17, 24

Meeting Location: Lake Williams Parking, South George Street Departure Time: 6:00 PM
Hike Leaders: David & Elizabeth Lukes, 717-818-4751 or Carpool Fee: None

SUNDAY, APRIL 7 – MEDIUM HIKE (8.8 MILES): Loop hike on the AT and Sunset Rocks Trail in Michaux State Forest. The hike will start at the AT parking lot near the bathrooms and picnic pavilions in Pine Grove Furnace State Park and proceed South on the AT to Sunset Rocks Trail before rejoining a portion of the AT previously hiked, to return to the parking lot. Along the way we'll cross Tom's Run, see the remains of a barn built by Hessians captured at the battle of Trenton in the Revolutionary War, and see what's left of Camp Michaux; a WWII POW camp for captured German soldiers. We will pass the Tom's Run AT shelter where we can stop for lunch; enjoy a .4 mile fairly strenuous rock scramble and the views at the trail namesake, Sunset Rocks. Bring good hiking shoes/boots, lunch, and water.

Meeting Location: 1201 Woodberry Road parking, off of RT 30 at RT 616 Departure Time: 9:00 AM
Hike Leaders: Bob Caldwell 717-321-3027 and Yudit Watkins 717-870-1716 Carpool Fee: $5.00

SATURDAY, APRIL 13 – LONG HIKE (8-10 MILES): Sugarloaf Mountain, Md. This "stand alone" mountain is just south of Frederick, Md. So, it will be about a 90 minute drive from meet spot. Several times during the civil war, both sides used it as look out and signal station. This will be a lollipop hike, meaning we hike out, do a loop and then hike back on the same trail, so no shuttle is involved. There are some steep but short climbs with total ascents about 1,700 ft. to rate the trail moderate. Several scenic overlooks.
Bring hiking boots, poles, lunch, and water. Due to limited trail head parking, the hike leader has asked that all attendees meet at the carpool location.

Meeting Location: 1201 Woodberry Road parking, off of RT 30 at RT 616 Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Hike Leaders: Kim Shue & Gwenyth Loose, 717-688-5142 Carpool Fee: $5.00

SUNDAY, APRIL 14 – SHORT HIKE (3 MILES): From the lot on Sparton Road we will walk on the road for a short distance to connect with trail #5 and enjoy a walk around part of Lake Redman, passing through the bird sanctuary toward the end of the hike. This hike is approximately three miles with a few short, mild climbs along the way. Come out and join us for a stroll through a very pretty area of York County.

Meeting Location: Sparton Road off of Hess Farm Road Departure Time: 12:00 PM
Hike Leaders: Kim Pavlick & Rafael Ruiz, 717-501-5443 Carpool Fee: None

SATURDAY, APRIL 20 –EARTH DAY CLEANUP HIKE (5-6 MILES): We will hike up the "Dragon Spine" section of Mason-Dixon Trail then head down rolling terrain to Green Branch Run and return. The rock scramble at the beginning and end is mildly challenging. There are two high lookout sections where you may see Eagles, Hawks or Buzzards at eye level (I have many times). We can see the Turkey Hill windmills the entire hike and view the 'Mighty Susquehanna' from above. Bring large trash bags and old gloves if picking up, I'll bring some also. Bring lunch, water, wear sturdy hiking shoes. Come join us for this beautiful spring hike!

Meeting Location: Lock 2 Recreation Area, first parking lot past Shank's Mare Outfitters along river next to playground
Departure Time: 9:00 AM
Hike Leader: Janine Zell, 717-684-7891 or Day of Hike (cell): 717- 371-6743

TUESDAY, APRIL 23 – BOARD MEETING, 7:00 PM

SATURDAY-SUNDAY, APRIL 27-28 – FLOWER HIKE AND COVERED DISH LUNCH: It is a nice time of the year to spend the night or just come for the day on Sunday. Each spring there is an amazing display of wildflowers along the Susquehanna River at the John Paul Jones Cabin. John Seville will lead the flower hike on Sunday, at 10:00 AM, identifying up to 30 types of wildflowers. Those who would like can continue on from Urey Overlook for a 4 to 5 mile hike to be led by an unnamed volunteer. The others may return to the cabin, sit on the porch or by the fireside, and wait for the lunch which will start at 1:30 PM.
