SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 - LONG HIKE (12 MILES): This hike around Lake Redman will include crossing under I-83 at 2 separate locations which requires walking through water for over 100 feet or more. The first water crossing is through a rocky stream bed, and the second stream crossing is through a four-and-a-half-foot high culvert. The trail has several hills, rocky in sections, and can be muddy depending on the previous day’s weather. Recommend sturdy trail shoes or hiking boots. Bring a lunch, snacks, and water. A flashlight or headlamp may be useful when crossing through the low culvert. Please contact the hike leader if planning on meeting at Lake Redman instead of the meeting location.
Meeting Location: York County High School of Technology (Vo-Tec) Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Hike Leader: Alan Noble, 717-758-8470 or Carpool Fee: $2.00

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 – MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): Loop hike starting on Turkey Hill Trail to Chestnut Grove Natural Area with return along the Susquehanna River on Enola Low Grade Trail. The trail includes stream crossing and steep hill. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and snacks.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 – ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND COVERED DISH: NOTICE: At the Sep 21 Annual Meeting, two proposed amendments to the by-laws will be voted on. The first will add a provision required by state law so that directors of YHC will not be personally liable for monetary damages. The second will remove the requirement to hike 30 miles on regularly scheduled club hikes. In addition the club is looking for a person to serve as a Director at Large to serve on the YHC Board. A Director at Large helps steer the club’s activities, provide advice, and votes on proposed amendments and expenditures affecting the club. Please contact Alan Noble at or 717-758-8470 if you are interested in being a Director at Large. As has been our tradition this will be a covered dish event. Please contact Alan Noble and let him know what you are bringing.
Meeting Time: 6:30 to 8:30 PM
Meeting Location: Our place for meetings/events  is inside the York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 (FAMILY HIKING DAY) – SHORT HIKES (3-4 MILES): Bring the family and join Appalachian Trail Section Hiker and Eagle Scout candidate David Lukes, Jr. for a family friendly hike at Rocky Ridge County Park. He’ll take you on a short hike around some of the trails that give Rocky Ridge its name, so expect some rocks and hills. Along the way, feel free to ask him anything you like about scouting or backpacking the Appalachian Trail (he’s hiked over 1000 miles of it so far). Hikes will be offered both in the morning and afternoon. Each will follow a different route.
Meeting Location: Rocky Ridge County Park, first lot on the left, near the restrooms Departure Time: 10:30 AM & 1:30 PM
Hike Leaders: David Lukes (Jr. and Sr.), 717-818-4751 or

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 - LONG HIKE (14 MILES): Pulpit Rocks and the Pinnacle are considered by many to be the best views along the Appalachian Trail in PA, and the hike out of Port Clinton is one of the best climbs. We’ll cover all of that on this rugged AT section located near the Hamburg Reservoir. Less than 90 minutes from our meeting point, this hike is well worth the travel time. We’ll start with a short warmup along the Schuylkill River before we make the 1000 foot climb up to the ridge. After that workout, it will be up and down and up again to some awesome views of the valley below. Wear good hiking boots/shoes and bring water, lunch, and snacks. Please note, this is NOT the Pinnacle along the Susquehanna River.
Meeting Location: Boscov's East Parking near Red Robin Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Hike Leader: David Lukes, 717-818-4751 or Carpool Fee: $5.00

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30 - SHORT HIKE (3.5 MILES): A short visit to our neighbor to the west, let’s try out the Mary Anne Furnace Trail at Codorus State Park. This trek will take us next to a lake, wetlands, creeks, and woods! Maybe we will be lucky and see one of the famous Codorus Park Bald Eagles! Due to limited parking at the trail head, we will start the trail from the overflow parking lot between campground loops B and C, but I prefer we carpool from the Woodberry Road meet-up. Have water, snacks, good trail shoes/boots, and bug spray.
Meeting Location: Woodberry Road parking (From US 30, turn south onto RT 616, Left into Woodberry Rd. I use 1201 Woodberry Rd, West Manchester Township for Google-map directions)
Departure Time: 1:00 PM (Start hike around 1:30 / 1:45 from the Codorus Overflow Parking Lot)
Carpool Fee: $1.00 Hike Leader: Debby Morrissey, 617-320-6110 or

YHC History: The York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library, dating from the Club's founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. No more copies of the annual log books.

Card Committee: Linda Bean serves as the “card committee.” If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at or 764-1091 and she will send them a card from the club. New Email Address? Contact Bernie Frick ( ) or Phyllis Morley ( ). This information is held by the club only and will be used to send club information and for inclusion in our yearly logbook. Thank you for your cooperation.
