Please volunteer to lead a hike or two for this 2014 year.

MAY 3, SATURDAY, Medium Hike: About 8 miles at Harpers Ferry, WV. We’ll hike the A.T. into historic Harper Ferry town and then on to Maryland Heights and back to town. Most of the hike will be a loop with a strenuous climb in the middle. Great scenic views of the rivers, C&O canal and Virginia bluebells. Bring boots, lunch, water and dress for the weather. Carpool fee is $5.00. Meet at west parking on Woodberry Road parking at 8:00am. Hike Leader: Kim Shue, 717-688-5142 or

MAY 4, SUNDAY, Caving/Hiking: McAlister Cave contains about 2200 feet of surveyed passage which is fairly large by PA standards. It is entered through a slanted 2 foot diameter 8 foot long pipe. The passage is varied with some tight crawls, some difficult climbs and an interesting section of passage which requires you to use canyoning techniques to negotiate, although you’re never more than about 5 or 10 feet off the floor. There are also a series of dome pits, one of which is quite impressive. While not filled with formations, there are some speleothems that are noteworthy, so you may want to bring a camera in a durable case. If you’d like to attend, contact Kevin Dunleavy at Meet at 10:00am at the Clark’s Ferry commuter parking area by Peter’s Mountain. As you head up 322W from York, get off on the Route 147 exit and the parking area is immediately to the left. Afterwards there will be an optional 3-4 mile moderately difficult hike on the Appalachian Trail.

MAY 10, SATURDAY, Medium Hike: Approximately 8 miles in King’s Gap Environmental Center. Some moderate climbing, change in elevation of 1100 feet, enough to give us a good workout. It could be wet in areas if we have a lot of spring rains. Possible ice cream stop on the way home. Meet at Woodberry Road parking at 8:00am. Bring lunch, snacks, water and appropriate footwear. Carpool fee is $5.00. Hike Leaders: Tom and Phyllis Morley, 717-764-6822 or

MAY 17, SATURDAY, Medium Hike: 8 miles on the rail trail starting at Day’s Mill Road mile marker #17 and ending at Glatfelter Station Road. Mostly flat walking. Enjoy the beauty of the rail trail and the farm lands along the way. Meet at Day’s Mill Road parking lot at 10:00am. Bring boots, snacks and water. Hike Leader: Rebecca Borge, 717-318-4603 or

MAY 18, SUNDAY, Short Hike: 5 miles at Kelly’s Run. Includes some steep and rocky areas with a few stream crossings. There’s a good chance your feet will get wet. We’ll hike along waterfalls and possibly see some spring flowers along the way. We will also hike to the Pinnacle overlook. Meet at 8:00am at the Boscov's East Parking. Carpool fee is $3.00. Bring hike boots, water and snacks. Hike Leader: Barbara Culton, 717-676-1093 or

MAY 18, SUNDAY, Short Hike: The Three Creek Hike, about 5 miles on Otter Creek, Sawmill Run, and Furnace Run. Some decent climbs and possibly a wet boot crossing. Meet at south meeting place, Vo-Tec (York County High School of Technology), at 12:30pm Bring boots, snacks and water. Hike Leaders: Rob and Maureen Campbell, 717-840-4482 or

MAY 21, WEDNESDAY, Short Hike/Walk: Come stretch your legs midweek on a short 3 mile hike/walk at Rocky Ridge County Park. Meet at Rocky Ridge in the rear parking lot at 6:00pm. Bring hiking or tennis shoes. Hike Leader: Elyshia Menkin, 734-536-9453 or

MAY 26, MONDAY, Memorial Day: Hike and covered dish lunch at John Paul Jones (JPJ). John Seville will lead the hike at 10:00 am which will be followed by a covered dish lunch at 1:30pm. Please call the Seville’s at 717-244-6769 or email with your covered dish selection so that we can have a nice variety for the meal.

Announcements:

KTA is asking our club to lead a training hike leading up to the Super Hike in September. We are looking at the months of June, July or August for a hike.. If you have a desire to lead a hike, please contact Jim Hooper at or 717-252-3784. This is a perfect opportunity for the club to get some publicity.

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County
Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates only from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years very little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. We do not need any more copies of the annual log books.

Card Committee: Linda Bean has graciously agreed to be our “card committee” since Sally Zimmerer has moved from the area. If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at .net or 764-1091 and she will send them a card.

FEELING LEFT OUT???: Please don’t be bashful feel free to step forward anytime to lead a hike. Please don’t wait to be asked. Call the monthly chairperson or me Al Britton 717-741-0624 or . I will put you in touch with the right person. Not sure you know what to do or you would like some one to go over the hike with you, well call me, I’ll be glad to help. No experience is necessary, just a desire to get involved. The hike can be of any length.

GOT A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS? PLEASE NOTIFY Bernie Frick, and Phyllis Morley, if you have changed your e-mail address. This information is held by the club only and will be used to send club information and inclusion in our yearly logbook. Thank you for your cooperation.
