SUNDAY, AUGUST 6 - MEDIUM HIKE (8.5 MILES): Yes it’s August & people don’t like to go out in the heat, but we’re hikers right? This one’s pretty easy: 8.5 miles on the Swatara State Park rail trail. Great footing the whole way with some minor rolling terrain. We’ll cross the old Waterville Bridge & the new rail trail bridge across Swatara Creek, & pass a couple of old canal locks, all in all a gorgeous place. Please bring sturdy shoes, or sneakers will work, plenty of water, & lunch.

Meeting Location: North End meeting place Exit 24 route 83 Park and ride Lot N/E Corner Meeting Time: 8:00 AM
Carpool fee: $5.00 Hike leader: Jim McCoy, 717-984-2712 or

SUNDAY, AUGUST 13 – LONG HIKE (9.5 MILES): We’ll start at Cowans Gap State Park and hike north on the Standing Stone Trail to Route 522. This will be a point to point hike with a (what else?) big climb in the beginning. Along the way, we will pass three vistas, and an area of interest, Vanderbilt's Folly. For those wanting an even bigger workout, we can make a loop out of it using the Todd Trail and the Tuscarora Trail for about 15 miles. The loop will return us to Cowans Gap, where there is a sandy beach to soak our feet and a concession stand!

Meeting Location: West Parking Area on Woodberry Road parking Meeting Time: 8:00 AM
Carpool Fee: $5.00 Hike Leader: David Lukes, 717-818-4751 or

SUNDAY, AUGUST 20, MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): This is a pleasant hike starting from the parking lot of the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville out to the Accomac Inn and back. Most of the hike is in the shade following a level, open trail along the Susquehanna River. If the day is particularly hot we can stop at the Accomac for some refreshments.

Meeting Place: Boscov's East Parking lot (near the Texas Road House) off PA 24 Meeting Time: 12:30 PM
Carpool fee: $2.00 Hike leader: Bob Falsetti, 717 854-3437, or

SUNDAY, AUGUST 27, SHORT HIKE (3.5-5 MILES): A 3.5 to 5 mile hike around Lake Williams depending on the weather conditions and the hikers involved. If the heat index is favorable we can take the longer hike by including some of the trails abutting the lake. There are a few relatively easy climbs with most of the trails on flat terrain. Much of the walk will be in shaded areas.

Meeting Place: Lake Williams parking lot off of George Street. Meeting time: 12:30 PM
Carpool fee: None Hike leader: Eric Ling, 910 352-3756, or

Please note: Our historian, John Seville, notes that the York County Heritage Trust has a sizable collection of York Hiking Club memorabilia in its library. However, the material dates from the Club's Founding in 1932 to the early 1980s. For the past 30 years little material has been added to our collection. We want to correct this omission; so John is asking members who have Club related items that might be suitable for inclusion in our archives to call him at 717-244-6769. Examples would be minutes of meetings, accounts of special events, photographs, newspaper articles, etc. No more copies of the annual log books.

Card Committee: Linda Bean serves as the “card committee.” If you know of someone with a serious illness, having surgery, etc., please notify Linda at or 764-1091 and she will send them a card from the club. New Email Address? Contact Bernie Frick ( ) or Phyllis Morley ( ). This information is held by the club only and will be used to send club information and for inclusion in our yearly logbook. Thank you for your cooperation.
