January 1: TUESDAY - Happy New Year!!!!
January 6: SUNDAY - PORK & SAUERKRAUT HIKE - Join us for the traditional Pork & Sauerkraut event at JPJ. Jim Hooper will lead us on an approximate 6 mile circle hike from the cabin at 10:30 a.m. As usual, there is rugged terrain in this area, but the hike will be at a comfortable pace. Good boots & water and a positive outlook for the New Year are all that are required! Once again Diane McCoy will be preparing the meal. This is her 11th year! Thank you Diane!!! The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m. to hikers & non-hikers alike. Reservations are required & must be made by 8:00 p.m. January 4, & once made, must be paid. Cost for the meal will tentatively be $4.00 and $1.00 cabin fee for members & $ 2.00 for non-members. Call Diane at (717) 852-7570 to reserve.
January 11: FRIDAY - COVERED DISH AND SLIDES - York Township Recreation Building at 6:30-8:30 PM. Bring a dish to share. Having your own place setting is appreciated, but paper goods will be available. Follow along on a trip to parks and preserves, mostly national, but one international, some on our own but others with the hiking club, with a focus on several significant birds. Contact Alice or Bernie Frick for additional information at 843-6675.
Directions to the York Township Recreation Building as follows:
From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile. At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St. Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right. Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.
January 13: SUNDAY - Long Hike - This loop hike of approx. 11-12 miles in Michaux State Forest beginning at the end of Quarry Gap Road has everything---lake views, woodlands, a stream, good climbs, and 2 shelters along the A.T. for lunch and a rest stop. Bring hiking boots, lunch, water, rain gear, etc. Optional winery stop. Meet at Adams Electric at 8:00 AM. Hike leader: Gwen Loose, (717) 891-9967 caepool Fee: $5.00
January 18: FRIDAY - Trail Committee Meeting - Discuss the trail tasks and issues for the year. Any members are invited to attend. Meet at 7:15 pm at Hooper farm. Contact Jim Hooper at 717/252-03784 or
January 20: SUNDAY - MEDIUM HIKE Ė This is a moderately difficult hike from Pine Grove Furnace to Pole Steeple and back, a total of 5.4 miles. Hike begins near the furnace. Pass Fuller Lake, climb 779 feet to take in the view from Pole Steeple, descend to Laurel Lake, and return via the railroad bed. Meet at Adams Electric at 9:00AM. January 22: TUESDAY Ė BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING - Board of Directors meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the home of Lou and Sarah Tateosian, Reynolds Mill Road, York. Phone (717) 741-2652.
January 27: SUNDAY - Long Hike - Hike 10 miles on the Prettyboy Trail with many reservoir views. There are several small climbs and descents with a few small stream crossings. Bring boots, water and lunch. Meet at York County School of Technology, 8:30 AM. Carpool: $3. Leader: Tim Schmidt 717-235-5940.
Sean O'Shell of Duncannon has been invited to join the club. Sean has met the required 30 miles by doing trail maintenance. We thank him for his help and hope to continue seeing him on the trails.

WANTED: Individuals who are willing to lead short hikes on Wednesdays There is no need to wait for the weekend to get outside. Also people willing to be hike leaders. If you know a hike but are reluctant to step forward, please be assured that I will be glad to show you what is necessary to become a hike leader. No experience is necessary, just a desire to get involved. The hike can be of any length; I will be glad to go with you to scout out the hike. Please contact Al Britton 717-741-0624 or
