SUNDAY, JANUARY 5 - SHORT HIKE (4.5 MILES) Did you eat too many Christmas cookies? Start the New Year off right! Stretch your legs and work off a few calories! Let’s go just south of the Mason Dixon Line to near Parkton, MD. There we will hike on the Northern Central Railroad Trail called the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. We will walk along beautiful icy Fourth Mine Branch of Little Falls Creek. I am hoping for a light covering of snow to accentuate the icy decorations.
Meeting Location: York County High School of Technology (Vo-Tec) Departure Time: 1:00 PM
Hike Leaders: Sarah and Lou Tateosian 717 741 2652 Car Pool Fee: $1.00

SUNDAY, JANUARY 12 - PORK & SAUERKRAUT HIKE: Join us for the traditional Pork & Sauerkraut event at JPJ. Jim McCoy will lead a 5 to 6 mile circle hike from the cabin leaving promptly at 10:00 a.m. There is rugged terrain in this area, but the hike will be at a comfortable pace. Good boots and water and a positive outlook for the New Year are all that are required! Once again Diane McCoy will be preparing the meal. The meal will be served at 1:30 p.m. to hikers & non-hikers alike. Reservations are required and must be made by 8:00 p.m. Thursday Jan. 11, and once made, must be paid. Cost for the meal will tentatively be $4.00 plus a $1.00 cabin fee for members and $2.00 for non-members. Call Diane at (717) 984-2712 to reserve. JPJ, 1145 Furnace Rd., Airville, PA 17302

SATURDAY, JANUARY 18 – MEDIUM HIKE (6 MILES): This is the second part of The Northwest Lancaster County River Trail trilogy hike. This time we start at the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center in Marietta and hike to the Riverfront Park. As the name indicates, we will be next to the Susquehanna River. Great view of the river and its surrounding wet lands. This is a point to point hike. In other words, we take the same route back to the parking lot. The path is paved without inclines. Please dress warm! Don’t forget water and snacks. A bonus of this hike is all the taverns at Marietta, where interested hikers can warm up and rejoice after the hike!
Meeting Location: Boscov's East Parking Red Robin Departure Time: 9:00 AM
Alternate Meeting Location: Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 4 Donegal Pl, Marietta, PA 17547 Hike Leaders: Regina and George Haritos (717-417-6191) and on day of hike (717-332-2221) Carpool Fee: $1.00

SUNDAY, JANUARY 19 - LONG HIKE (10-12 MILES): We’ll take a field trip to the lovely Susquehanna State Park in Maryland, just below Conowingo Dam. We are going to see some very old and very large trees on this hike. We’ll also see some Revolutionary War era structures, take in some views of the Susquehanna River, and hike a bit of the Mason-Dixon Trail. Did I mention bald eagles? There will very likely be some bald eagles. Some flats, some climbs, but the trails should be in pretty good shape. Roots and rocks, maybe some mud, maybe some snow, so wear good boots/hiking shoes. Bring snacks, lunch, and water.
Meeting Location: York County High School of Technology (Vo-Tec) Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Hike Leader: David Lukes, 717-818-4751 or Carpool Fee: $5.00

FRIDAY, JANUARY 24-COVERED DISH DINNER AND SLIDE SHOW: York Township Recreation Building at 6:30 to 8:30PM. Bring a dish to share. Having your own place setting is appreciated, but paper goods will be available. The Greatest Earth on Show: State Park Edition, will be presented by Ronald Warner, expert photographer and speaker. He has this to say about his talk: While the National Parks on the Colorado Plateau are some of the most beautiful places on planet Earth, the State Parks are just as beautiful. This year I will show my photos and talk about my favorite hikes in Valley of Fire, Snow Canyon, Kodachrome Basin, Dead Horse Point and Goblin Valley. Each of these gems have unique geological features, wonderful trails, fine campgrounds and fewer people than the National Parks. Don’t tell anybody….

York Township Recreation Building, directions as follows:

From I-83 exit 16, take Queen St (PA-74) south for about 1 mile.  At Campbell Music, turn left onto Oak St.  Drive about a tenth of a mile and stop at the stop sign; do not turn right.  Drive straight ahead past the township building to the small building in the middle of the field.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 26 – MEDIUM/LONG HIKE (8-9 miles): Hiking on the less-known and multi-use trails in Michaux State Forest, south of US Route 30. Hike not scouted as of this writing, so be prepared for anything ;-) Bring lunch and water and wear sturdy boots.
